Tommi’s Story
Tommi was an incredibly active 17-year-old. She rode horses, cheered, earned A’s and B’s, and had a full life ahead of her.
Then everything changed.
Her mom described overwhelming fatigue that kept Tommi in bed much of the day. Migraines and brain fog made schoolwork incredibly difficult. POTS and the Autonomic Nervous System
POTS isn’t simply about a fast heartbeat.
At the center of the condition is dysautonomia — dysfunction within the Autonomic Nervous System.
And that matters because your Autonomic Nervous System is constantly working behind the scenes.
Think of it as the body’s automatic control system.
It helps regulate heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature, sleep, energy, and the body’s response to stress — without your child having to consciously think about any of it.
Normally, when we move from lying down to standing, the nervous system quickly coordinates changes in blood vessels, heart rate, and circulation to help keep blood moving where it needs to go.
With POTS, that regulation isn’t happening as efficiently.
That’s why what looks like a “heart problem” can come with symptoms throughout the entire body — dizziness, fatigue, headaches, brain fog, digestive challenges, temperature sensitivity, sleep difficulties, and more.
The common denominator connecting many of those functions?
The nervous system.
The Gas Pedal and Brake Pedal

Your sympathetic nervous system is your gas pedal.
It helps your body respond to stress, increases heart rate, mobilizes energy, and prepares you to take action.
Your parasympathetic nervous system — heavily influenced by the vagus nerve — acts more like your brake pedal. It supports rest, digestion, recovery, regulation, and restoration.
We need both.

The “Perfect Storm” Behind POTS
One of the biggest things we want families to understand is that there isn’t always one single event that explains why a nervous system becomes dysregulated.
Instead, we often think about what we call the Perfect Storm.
Stress can accumulate over time.
For one child, that story may include a difficult pregnancy or birth. For another, it may include repeated illnesses, injuries, chronic emotional stress, disrupted sleep, prolonged periods of inactivity, or other physical and physiological stressors.
For another child, symptoms may become noticeable following an infection.
Often, it’s not about finding one event to blame.
It’s about understanding the entire neurological story.
Think about a bucket slowly filling with water.
One stressor may not cause the bucket to overflow. Neither may the next one. But as stress continues accumulating without enough opportunity for recovery and regulation, eventually the system can reach a tipping point.
That is why we spend so much time listening to a child’s entire history — not simply the symptoms they’re experiencing today.
The timeline matters.
The sequence matters.
And the nervous system’s ability to adapt matters.
Why Symptom Management May Not Feel Like Enough
Salt, fluids, compression, medication, gradual movement, sleep, and nutrition can all have roles in helping someone with POTS function and manage symptoms.
Those tools shouldn’t automatically be dismissed.
But many parents still find themselves asking:
“What else can we learn about why my child’s body is struggling so much?”
